Call for new volunteers for Community Connects Friendly Call Service

Avondhu Blackwater Partnership’s Community Connect Programme which provides valuable services to older people in local communities has become a central focus for the company during the Covid 19 pandemic. Mary Allen, programme supervisor with Community Connect, says that through the Community Connect friendly call service volunteers and staff have increased social contact with older people who are isolated in their homes at this time and they have been making sure they have the support they need to continue cocooning. Due to the Covid19 restrictions our volunteers and staff have been working remotely from home making sure there is no interruption to the service. People are happy to get the call and feel more secure knowing that they can call on us if needed.  ‘It is so good of you to check in, it is great to see we haven’t been forgotten about’ has been typical of the feedback we have been getting from our callers. Mary Allen goes on to say that the increased contact being made through the friendly call service over the last couple of months has highlighted the importance of the service and also the need for additional volunteers to meet the rising tide of isolation being felt by older people in our communities. Given the Covid19 restrictions Mary feels that while this isolation is being felt more acutely at this moment in time it is not a problem that will subside once the pandemic eases. This is an ongoing societal issue that needs additional support and Mary would ask people if they have the time that they contact her and discuss confidentially the opportunity to become a valued volunteer with the Community Connect service.
